Mendi masks from Sierra Leone were used in the rituals of
the Bundu (or Sande) women's secret societies. These Societies
served to prepare girls for marriage and childbearing, with prospective
husbands often paying the initiation fee. During rutuals, the masks,
carved from the trunk of a tree to fit over the entire head and painted
black, were worn with a costume of black fiber. The extravagant
carving on the top of the mask represents the traditional hairstyles of a
particular group. |
