Jenny Towler: From the Ballad of Mac the Knife
oil on panel
h 15.5 x w 24 inches

This striking work is the first in a series of paintings based
on the play, The Threepenny Opera.  Inspired by
Berthold  Brecht’s lyrics, this meticulous painting
invites the viewer's voyeurism.

Jenny Towler turned up lately
with a knife stuck through her breast
while Mac heath walks the embankment
nonchalantly unimpressed

I Only Have Eyes For You

Foley’s trademark mixture of satire and sincerity is achieved by collaging characters from her own life into atypical scenes. This painting shows Café 1-2-3 , a local landmark where, in reality, the artist’s husband plays the piano. Singer Sandy Merrill, a former Chicagoan, croons into the microphone. In the background, the building owner attempts to pick up a prostitute, who is modeled on his real-life business accountant.
