Esther Shimazu
New Work in Stoneware and Bronze
Esther Shimazu’s newest
sculptures continue to build on her familiar theme of the round, naked, bald,
and largely unadorned woman. Her fleshy bordello like figures, in unabashedly playful and
buoyant poses, with their limbs splayed about seem to defy the weight of the
material with which Shimazu works. The
ceramic sculptures, highly detailed and convincingly lifelike, emanate a mood of
lightheartedness and gaiety.
